It doesn't take long to get a job at Heartland Community Church.
New members or attendees who are ready to get involved with the Rockford, IL congregation learn about their spiritual gifts during a 4-hour "Get in the Game" seminar--but they leave with much more than knowledge.
"We tell them at the beginning of the seminar, 'When you leave here tonight,
you will leave with a place to serve,' " says Gordy Smith, Heartland’s
pastor of adult ministries.
During the seminar, each ministry leader at Heartland gives an overview of their
initiatives, and participants sign up on the spot for a ministry. The church
experiences a 95% "engagement rate"--people who leave that night with
a ministry task and team.
"Sometimes it seems the more you know about spiritual gifts,
the more hurdles there are to actually using them and serving," says
Heartland directional leader Mark Bankord. "The path to true understanding
is a serving path, not a learning path. You have to serve somewhere."
Heartland’s streamlined approach illustrates a benchmark of churches that
